Research
without
compromise.
The Grey Earth was founded in 2019 by a group of scientists, economists, and policy specialists who were tired of watching climate research get diluted by political convenience and corporate influence.
Born from
frustration.
At COP26 in Glasgow, Dr. Amara Okafor sat in a negotiation room watching delegates water down language on fossil fuel phase-out — language that had already been agreed by scientists years earlier. The gap between what the IPCC said was necessary and what politicians were willing to do had become a chasm.
She left the conference early and called five people: a marine biologist, an economist, a constitutional lawyer, a systems scientist, and a journalist. By January 2019, The Grey Earth was operating out of a borrowed office in Stockholm with a simple mission: produce research so rigorous and so clearly communicated that ignoring it becomes politically impossible.
Today, we are a team of 34 researchers across 12 countries. We have zero corporate funding, no fossil fuel ties, and a board that can fire the Executive Director if we ever compromise our independence.
How we work
Independence
We accept no funding from fossil fuel companies, their foundations, or affiliated entities. Our donors cannot review or influence our findings.
Open Access
Every report, dataset, and methodology we produce is freely available. Knowledge about the climate crisis should not be paywalled.
Rigor
All research undergoes triple peer review. We publish our methodology, raw data, and any conflicts of interest upfront.
Impact
We track whether our research changes policy, not just citation counts. If it sits unread, we have failed.

Our funding comes from three sources: individual donors (42%), philanthropic foundations with no fossil fuel ties (38%), and research grants from governments and international bodies (20%).
No single donor contributes more than 15% of our annual budget. Our full donor list, audited financials, and conflict of interest declarations are published annually and available below.
